We have a rich history of commitment to equality. In the 19th century, Unitarians preached for abolition of the slave trade, emancipation of women, state education, universal suffrage and penal reform.
In the 20th century, we strove to achieve legal and social equity for lesbians and gay men. Integroup was founded in 1971 as a church-based organisation to engage gays and lesbians. It was one of the first grassroots church initiatives of its kind in Britain. The Lesbian and Gay Switchboard and the Lesbian and Gay Bereavement Project (founded by Unitarians) grew from this group.
Same-sex partnership blessings
We are frequently asked to officiate at services of blessing or affirmation for same-sex couples. These are opportunities for the couples to give thanks for the love that has grown between them, and to make public statements of commitment to one another. Such ceremonies don't have legal status in current law, but are a chance to make a public statement in an individual and beautiful manner.
